Traveling press are seated in the very back. They don’t fly for free: news organizations must reimburse the government for the cost of travel. Occasionally, the president will walk back to the press section to talk and answer questions. One estimate, published in a leading newspaper, quoted the expense at over $80,000 per journalist, per trip! Most of them fly the charter plane that follows Air Force One to the destination.
