Challenger 2
United Kingdom 路 In service 1998
The Challenger 2 is Britain's main battle tank, renowned for its Chobham/Dorchester armor, some of the most effective passive protection ever fitted to a tank. The rifled L30A1 gun provides exceptional accuracy, though it limits ammunition interoperability with NATO allies.
The Matchup
Both tanks prioritize crew survivability above all else, but through different means: the Merkava with its front-mounted engine and Trophy APS, the Challenger with its legendary Chobham armor. Which approach works better?

Strengths & Weaknesses
Merkava IV
Strengths
- + Trophy APS has intercepted live ATGMs in combat
- + Front-mounted engine acts as additional crew protection
- + Rear compartment can evacuate wounded or carry infantry
- + Battle-proven in urban and asymmetric warfare
Weaknesses
- - Very heavy with moderate mobility
- - Front-mounted engine complicates maintenance access
- - Not designed for export, tailored to Israeli doctrine
- - Lower top speed than Western peers on open terrain
Challenger 2
Strengths
- + Chobham/Dorchester armor is among the best passive protection
- + No Challenger 2 crew member has been killed by enemy fire
- + Rifled gun offers exceptional accuracy at range
- + Being upgraded to Challenger 3 with Rheinmetall L/55 gun
Weaknesses
- - Underpowered engine for its weight, lowest hp/ton ratio
- - Rifled gun incompatible with NATO standard smoothbore ammunition
- - Aging fire control system (being addressed in CR3 upgrade)
- - Small production run limits spare parts availability
Verdict
The Merkava IV, especially with the Trophy APS, is the more capable tank in 2025. The Challenger 2's passive armor is superb but its aging fire control and underpowered engine limit it. The CR3 upgrade should change this equation significantly.
