North Atlantic Treaty Organization

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance of 32 member nations committed to collective defense, where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is the most powerful military alliance in history, founded in 1949 to deter Soviet aggression against Western Europe. The alliance's cornerstone is Article 5, which states that an armed attack against one member shall be considered an attack against all members, obligating each to assist the attacked nation. Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

NATO currently includes 32 member nations spanning North America and Europe, with Sweden and Finland joining in 2023 and 2024 respectively in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The alliance maintains an integrated military command structure, conducts regular exercises to ensure interoperability, and has deployed forces to operations ranging from peacekeeping in the Balkans to combat operations in Afghanistan and air campaigns over Libya.

NATO's military strength is anchored by the United States, which provides the alliance's nuclear umbrella, the majority of its advanced military capabilities, and roughly 70% of combined defense spending. However, the alliance's true strength lies in the political commitment of democratic nations to collective defense, which has kept the peace in Europe for over seven decades and expanded to address new threats including cyber attacks, hybrid warfare, and terrorism.
