SIGINT
Signals Intelligence
Signals Intelligence is intelligence derived from intercepting and analyzing electronic signals, including communications (COMINT) and non-communication emissions like radar (ELINT).
Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) is the collection and analysis of electronic emissions to produce actionable intelligence. It encompasses two main disciplines: Communications Intelligence (COMINT), which involves intercepting voice and data communications, and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), which involves collecting and analyzing non-communication signals such as radar emissions, weapon system telemetry, and navigation signals.
SIGINT has been a critical intelligence source since World War II, when the Allied breaking of German Enigma codes and Japanese naval codes provided decisive strategic advantages. Modern SIGINT operations use satellites, aircraft like the RC-135 Rivet Joint, ground stations, submarines, and cyber tools to intercept and process an enormous volume of electronic signals from around the world.
In tactical military operations, SIGINT provides real-time intelligence on enemy force locations, movements, and intentions by intercepting their communications and tracking their radar emissions. Electronic order of battle, the identification and mapping of all enemy electronic emitters, is a fundamental SIGINT product that directly supports SEAD operations, electronic warfare planning, and targeting. The National Security Agency (NSA) is the primary SIGINT organization for the U.S. intelligence community.
