Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is a pilotless aircraft operated remotely or autonomously, used for reconnaissance, surveillance, strike, and an expanding range of military missions.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly called drones, have become one of the most transformative military technologies of the 21st century. Ranging from small hand-launched reconnaissance drones weighing a few pounds to large armed systems like the MQ-9 Reaper with a wingspan exceeding 65 feet, UAVs perform missions that are too dull, dirty, or dangerous for manned aircraft, or that require persistence beyond what human endurance allows.

The MQ-9 Reaper exemplifies the armed UAV concept, carrying precision-guided weapons while loitering over a target area for over 20 hours. Operated by a pilot and sensor operator sitting in a ground control station thousands of miles from the aircraft, the Reaper has conducted thousands of precision strikes in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and other theaters. Smaller tactical UAVs like the RQ-20 Puma provide infantry units with organic aerial reconnaissance.

The conflict in Ukraine has dramatically expanded the role of UAVs in warfare, with both sides using commercial drones modified to carry grenades, first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drones that cost as little as $500, and larger systems for reconnaissance and strike. This proliferation has demonstrated that UAVs are not just a tool of advanced militaries but a weapon accessible to any force, fundamentally changing the character of modern combat.
